When you are choosing the material for your redecoration you are better choosing Mdf skirting because it is the easiest to use.
Most skirting board profiles are quite standard but when it comes to choosing the best profile for you, you will need to decide whether you want to stick with one of these standard ones or go for something more modern so that your skirting will stand out from the crowd, but either way we have a good choice for you. If you are choosing between hardwoods and want to go for something that is very luxurious and expensive looking you might choose the same the most hotels and restaurants will use which is either oak or walnut, because both are durable, long lasting and of a very high quality. Walnut is without doubt the most luxurious and has a rich and dark grain, however if you want a hardwood that is not so expensive as the rest you may choose ash which is similar to oak but not so expensive. Skirting board comes in various heights and sizes, so when you are choosing the size you need to consider the size of your rooms and height of your ceilings to make sure the skirting board will be in proportion to the rest of the house. If your house has low ceilings then you may want to consider using a small skirting board so that it does not dominate your wall, however if you have high ceilings then you will need a taller skirting board so that it doesn't look lost in the room.
Painting skirting board will require a preparation of priming and sanding before the final coats go on. The reason for this is when woods and particularly mdf are profiled, there will be a slight burr or furr on the profiled section which when primed will produce a raised surface which will be rough to touch, and prior to painting this will need to be sanded to produce a smooth finish. This isn't so bad when using a good quality hardwood because it is generally harder underneath, however with mdf it is a fibrous material which will be furry.
